18 Jul 2024 24 Hours in Nantucket: A Perfect Summer Escape
Nota: Hace mucho que no escribo en este espacio, pero por alguna razón necesitaba volver a hacerlo, tengo muchas cosas que compartir y mi vida ha cambiado mucho, pero decidí comenzar por compartir esta aventura de verano, un lugar mágico que me hizo revivir mi artista interior. Este verano, decidimos que pasará lo que pasará, ¡iríamos a Nantucket! Mientras planeábamos un día libre sin bebé, insistí en que este viaje era innegociable. Durante una visita a la familia en Massachusetts, logramos hacer una rápida escapada de 24 horas a esta encantadora isla.
Las tres islas famosas al sur de Massachusetts que conozco—Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, y Naushon (una de las Islas Elizabeth)—están llenas de historia. Según la leyenda, Martha’s Vineyard fue nombrada en honor a Martha, la hija del explorador Bartholomew Gosnold, mientras que los nombres Nantucket y Naushon (a veces llamada Nashawena, una isla privada) derivan del idioma nativo Wampanoag (una lengua nativa americana de los Wampanoag, quienes son nativos del sureste de Massachusetts). Gosnold fue una figura clave en los primeros intentos de colonización inglesa de EEUU.
- Martha’s Vineyard: Nombrada en honor a la hija de Gosnold, Martha, y a las uvas silvestres (viñedo) que encontró allí.
- Nantucket: Significa “tierra lejana” o “isla.”
- Naushon o Nashawena: Significa “isla del medio.”
Nuestra aventura comenzó con la búsqueda de una posada encantadora, aunque pequeña. A pesar de los altos precios del alojamiento en la isla, el encanto de la posada hizo que valiera la pena cada centavo.
Día 1:
Después de llegar y pasear un poco por las hermosas callecitas, nos instalamos en el Anchor Inn, una posada pequeña pero con habitaciones muy lindas.
Comimos en el Nantucket Tap Room. Nos sentamos junto a un grupo de amigos muy amigables que nos contaron que habían estado alquilando en Nantucket durante 17 años y que acababan de comprar una casa este verano. Nos recomendaron varios lugares para cenar: Sistership, Brotherhood of Thieves y The Nautilus, entre otros.
Nantucket es conocida por sus increíbles opciones de compras, ofreciendo hallazgos únicos junto a marcas reconocidas como Ralph Lauren, Faherty y Vineyard Vines. Visitamos algunas tiendas locales y nos sumergimos en Mitchell’s Book Corner, una hermosa librería con mucha historia y libros sobre Nantucket. También encontramos una tienda de alquiler de bicicletas y verificamos las bicicletas para el día siguiente. Un descubrimiento divertido fue una máquina expendedora con productos de J.Crew, llamada J.Crew Swim Club, que ofrecía regalos gratis.
Hay muchas cafeterías lindas; tomamos té helado en The Corner Table Cafe y luego nos preparamos para la cena. Teníamos una reserva en Sistership, un restaurante y club de cócteles muy fresco y relajado. La comida deliciosa la verdad y el ambiente increible. Una nota importante es que llevar un vestido o algo para la noche, el dresscode de Nantucket es serio 🙂
Día 2:
Tuvimos un delicioso desayuno en Born and Bread, un lugar hermoso todo blanco, y luego nos dirigimos a la tienda de alquiler de bicicletas. Después de elegir nuestro transporte para el día (también tenían bicicletas eléctricas), nos dirigimos a Madaket Beach con un propósito en mente: visitar el Millie’s original, o como yo lo llamo, la sede de Millie’s. El paseo se sintió largo pero hermoso. Nantucket tiene algunas de las ciclovías más hermosas que he experimentado, conectando toda la isla.
Importante tener cuidado con el sol y usar mucho protector solar. Durante nuestro recorrido, pasamos por hermosos estanques, senderos y paisajes naturales. La Fundación de Conservación de Nantucket posee y protege el hermoso ecosistema de la isla. Las casas son encantadoras, todas con paredes revestidas de tejas de cedro, un estilo único de la isla. Simples, con muchos arcos, puertas elaboradas y típicos caminos de conchas blancas.
Madaket Beach es increíble, tan costera y remota. Aunque no pudimos nadar debido a las olas, fue mágico. Después, probamos el Poke bowl y la sopa de almejas en Millie’s (¡imperdible!), y confirme que venden mi helado favorito de Millie´s: galletas y crema.
De vuelta en en centro de Nantucket, hicimos algunas compras de última hora antes de regresar a casa para reunirnos con nuestro bebé y abuelos. Mini-vacaciones como esta son increibles, y recomiendo encarecidamente agregar Nantucket a tu lista de viajes: es una isla verdaderamente hermosa.
Nuestra Lista Corta de Lugares que Probamos:
- Almuerzo: Nantucket Tap Room – Comida deliciosa en un hermoso entorno al aire libre rodeado de hortensias.
- Cena: Sistership – Increíble ambiente y deliciosa comida (recomiendo mucho las tapas: coliflor y pulpo). No recomendaría las bebidas sin alcohol.
- Desayuno: Born and Bread – Increíbles sándwiches en una exquisita panadería toda blanca. Espacio limitado para sentarse, pero aún así encantador.
- Almuerzo Otra Vez: Millie’s en Madaket – Ubicado en el extremo más al sur de la isla, Millie’s es un clásico. Conocimos Millie’s en Washington, DC, donde está ubicado en AU Park. Si estás en el área de DC, ¡recomiendo encarecidamente este lugar!
24 Hours in Nantucket: A Perfect Summer Escape
Note: It’s been a long time since I last wrote in this space, but for some reason, I needed to do it again. I have many things to share and my life has changed a lot, but I decided to start by sharing this summer adventure, a magical place that rekindled my inner artist. Nina 🙂
This summer, we decided that no matter what, we were going to Nantucket! While planning a kid-free day off, I insisted that this trip was non-negotiable. During a visit to family in Massachusetts, we managed to squeeze in a quick 24-hour getaway to this charming island.
The three famous islands south of Massachusetts that I know—Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, and Naushon (one of the Elizabeth Islands)—are steeped in history. According to legend, Martha’s Vineyard was named after explorer Bartholomew Gosnold’s daughter Martha, while the names Nantucket and Naushon (sometimes called Nashawena, a privately owned island) are derived from the native Wampanoag language (a native american language from the Wampanoag people, who are native to southeastern Massachusetts) Gosnold was a key figure in the early attempts at English colonization of North America.
- Martha’s Vineyard: Named in honor of Gosnold’s daughter Martha and the wild grapes (vineyard) he found there.
- Nantucket: Means “faraway land” or “island.”
- Naushon or Nashawena: Means “middle island.”
Our adventure began with finding a lovely, albeit small, inn. Despite the high lodging prices, the inn’s charm made it worth every penny.
Day 1:
After arriving and wandering around, we settled in the Anchor Inn, a small but with very cute rooms.
We ate at the Nantucket Tap Room. We sat next to a very friendly group of friends who shared that they had been renting in Nantucket for 17 years and had just bought a house this summer! They recommended several dinner spots: Sistership, Brotherhood of Thieves, and The Nautilus, among others.
Nantucket is renowned for its amazing shopping options, offering unique finds alongside well-known brands like Ralph Lauren, Faherty, and Vineyard Vines. We visited some local stores and delved into Mitchell’s Book Corner, a beautiful bookstore with lots of history and books about Nantucket. We also found a bike rental store and checked out bikes for the next day. An amusing discovery was a vending machine with J.Crew products, called J.Crew Swim Club, offering free presents!
There are many cute coffee shops, we had some iced tea at The Corner Table Cafe and then we got ready for dinner. We had a reservation in Sistership, a very cool and relaxed restaurant and cocktail club. Food was delish!
Day 2:
We had a lovely breakfast at Born and Bread, a beautiful spot, and then headed to the bike rental place. After choosing our transport for the day (they had e-bikes too), we headed to Madaket Beach with one purpose in mind: visiting the original Millie’s, or as I call it, Millie’s HQ. The ride felt long but beautiful. Nantucket has some of the most beautiful bike paths I’ve ever experienced, connecting the entire island!
Be aware of the sun and use plenty of sunblock. On our ride, we passed beautiful ponds, trails, and natural landscapes. The Nantucket Conservation Foundation owns and protects the island’s beautiful ecosystem. The houses are charming, all featuring cedar shingle-clad walls—a style unique to the island. Simple, with lots of arches, elaborate doorways, and typical white seashell driveways.
Madaket Beach was incredible—so coastal and remote. Although we couldn’t swim due to the waves, it was magical. Afterward, we tried the poke and clam chowder at Millie’s (a must!), and I confirmed that they sell my favorite Millie’s ice cream: cookies and cream!
Back in town, we did some last-minute shopping before heading home to reunite with our baby and grandparents. Mini-vacations like this are wonderful, and I highly recommend adding Nantucket to your travel list—it’s a truly beautiful little island.
Our Short List of Places We Tried:
- Lunch: Nantucket Tap Room – Delicious food in a beautiful outdoor setting surrounded by hydrangeas.
- Dinner: Sistership – Incredible ambiance and delicious food (highly recommend the tapas: cauliflower and octopus). I wouldn’t recommend the non-alcoholic drinks, though.
- Breakfast: Born and Bread – Amazing sandwiches in an exquisite all-white bakery. Limited seating, but still lovely.
Lunch Again: Millie’s in Madaket – Located on the southernmost side of the island, Millie’s is a classic! We knew Millie’s from Washington, DC, where it’s located in AU Park. If you’re in the DC area, I highly recommend this place!
